New Year’s Eve

The street lamps tint

the night with a life

you never knew.

Because poverty is

a percentage

till you stand

in your dad’s childhood

kitchen with kerosene canisters,

canned corned beef,

and no running  water, and realize

it’s yours.

So you step back

out and the night is ripped

open by the flash

of seven thousand

fireworks, the pride

of your home.

Your dad rests his tired arm

around your shoulders

and you lean into his chest,

listening to the beat

of the blood

you’ve always shared.
